Get to Know Buffalo
Welcome to Buffalo, Texas! We hope you will visit
us soon. The City of Buffalo was named for the Bison that roamed the open
range and rolling hills of Leon County in the mid-1800s. The original
town site was laid out by the Texas Land Office to prepare the groundwork
for the arrival of the International and Great Northern Railroad. The
last spike of this railroad was driven in 1872. See

values and work ethics. Interstate 45 has expanded its accessibility to
all major cities in the great State of Texas. Buffalo is midway between
Dallas and Houston on I-45 where it intersects Highway 79. Seventy-five
percent of Texas’ population is only two hours from Buffalo, making
Buffalo virtually two hours from the world. Three major universities,
Texas A&M, Baylor and Sam Houston State, are within commuting distance.
Ranching and farming are very important in the economy of Buffalo and
Leon County. Buffalo is the Home of the National Champion Cutting Horse,
Chiquita Pistol, owned by Tooter Dorman and ridden by Tag Rice. We have
many young persons that have won trucks, saddles, trophies and ribbons
at local, state and national rodeos. Buffalo and Leon County rate in the
top 3 calf producing counties in Texas. In 2001, the Tri-County Horseshoe
Pitching Club was established. It has excellent facilities and holds local
tournaments and three statewide tournaments each year.
A traditional yearly event was established in 1980 called "The Buffalo
Stampede." It is designated to be held in the Fall on the third weekend
of September. Families and friends are involved in rodeos, bar-b-que,
beauty pageants, auctions, music, crafts, a parade and many other interesting
activities throughout the all-day event. You’re invited to come
and enjoy the event with us. Read more
